Sobaeksan National Park is one of Korea’s premier winter hiking destinations, renowned for its vast snow-covered ridges and breathtaking mountain scenery. Unlike the rugged granite peaks of Seoraksan or Bukhansan, Sobaeksan offers long, gently rolling ridgelines that transform into a spectacular winter wonderland after snowfall.
The highlight of the park is the ridge trail connecting Birobong Peak (1,439 m) and nearby summits. After fresh snow, hikers are rewarded with endless white landscapes, snow-laden trees, and panoramic views stretching across central Korea. On clear days, the contrast between the brilliant snowfields and the deep blue winter sky creates some of the most memorable mountain scenery in the country.
Winter hiking on Sobaeksan is both accessible and rewarding. While the temperatures can be harsh and strong winds are common along the ridges, the trails are generally well-maintained and suitable for hikers seeking a classic Korean winter mountain experience.
Whether you come for the pristine snowfields, the expansive ridge walks, or the stunning winter vistas, Sobaeksan offers an unforgettable journey through one of Korea’s most beautiful alpine landscapes.

Getting closer to the summit

Sobaeksan is famous for its spectacular rime ice(상고대) formations in winter. When cold winds and freezing fog sweep across the ridge, trees become coated in delicate white crystals, creating one of Korea's most iconic winter mountain landscapes.
